Confederate Virginia Governor McDonnell is right!

The US Civil war wasn’t about slavery. There were complex political, economic, and social differences between the North and South.

Political differences: In most Southern states it was legal to own slaves, in most Northern states it was not.

Economic differences: The South’s was based on large slave-powered plantations, the North’s on factories.

Social differences: In the South there was more support for slavery than in the North.

See? Nothing to do with it at all.

So we should, obviously, honor these visionaries who attempted to overthrow the lawful government of the USA.

Let me know if I’m not being sarcastic enough.

Failing teh intarwebs

The American Dialect Society has voted on the word of the year for 2009. The winner is "tweet".

tweet, noun, a short message sent via the Twitter.com service, and verb, the act of sending such a message.

It’s the 21st century version of “a little bird told me”.

The word of the decade is "google".

google, verb meaning "to search the Internet". Generic form of the trademarked "Google", the world’s dominant Internet search engine.

It’s the 21st century version of “smurf”.

The most useful word of the year is "fail".

fail, noun or interjection used when something is egregiously unsuccessful. Usually written as "FAIL!"

I really don’t have to explain this, do I? Not to you anyway.

I tried to google all of my tweets and ended up giving my PC avian flu. FAIL!

It’s a shame about Ray

Friday evening I bought a 32GB iPhone 3GS. I spent Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday morning working with it, and returned it on Sunday afternoon. I was seriously underwhelmed.

Here’s a short list of other things that are wrong with me:

• I don’t play or watch sports. Except for women’s beach volleyball and women’s beach volleyball.

• I don’t like Billie Holiday. Of course hearing David Sedaris’ impersonation would put anyone off of her.

• I don’t take advice. I will generally do the opposite of what’s recommended; it’s an ethnic trait.

• I don’t have a political party. All of them are clubs for crazy people.

• I don’t really have Seasonal Affective Disorder. I only pretend to have it to pick up chicks.

Also, I’ve never seen ‘E.T.’, but I don’t count this as a failing.

See what’ll happen if we let ’em vote?!

Ebook update. The Revolt of Man by Walter Besant – Written in 1882, The Revolt of Man takes place in a future England (much like Victorian England) after the Great Transition; a new religion has been founded, the monarchy abolished, and women rule over men. But this unnatural order cannot last and finally the men, led by the rightful heir to the throne, revolt! That’s why it’s called The Revolt of Man.

The timing of this addition to the Mala Fide eLibrary has got nothing to do with birthing, truthing, or death panels. Nothing at all.

"It is because the natural order has been reversed; the sex which should command and create is compelled to work in blind obedience."

Kiva

Kiva is a person-to-person micro-lending website. Members make small loans to the working poor around the world. It’s not a charity in the usual sense, but if you subscribe to the “teach a man to fish” school of thought it’s a great way to get your philanthrope on. So join, already.

One may loan solo, but there are lending teams. I’m a member of the Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, Freethinkers, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious lending team. If you’re non-religious, please join us.

Yes, I’m feeling all right. It’ll be back to the dark side and cookies next post.

OF MARS!

Ebook update. OF MARS!, the first five of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom novels; A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, The Warlord of Mars, Thuvia, Maid of Mars, and The Chessmen of Mars.

"…she emerged and gave herself into the hands of the slave girl, who rubbed the body of her mistress…" Pardon me, I have to have a lie-down.
