Things Ray Says #142
"The line is blurry, but it’s a line all the same."
(Insert rimshot here.)
According to the Wikipedia and About.com, Risk, the board game, was invented in the early 1950s by French film director Albert Lamorisse. One source gives some early inspirations, but the game was created after WWII, in France, by a réalisateur. This seriously freaks me out.
The French film director thing isn’t too bad, after all, Heddy Lamar was an inventor, but it’s like finding out that Orson Welles invented hopscotch. Pursuing a career in entertainment doesn’t necessarily make one an idiot, it just increases the chances.
The part that really suprises me is that the game dates from the 1950s. I’ve always thought…assumed really (yeah, I know, an ‘ass’ of ‘u’ and ‘me’, thanks, consider your ‘ass’ kicked), that the game dated from the Napoleonic era or more likely sometime not long after it. This assumption (don’t start) was based on the imagery in the Parker Brothers version of the game; Napoleonic infantrymen, cavalrymen, and artillery. Based on this alone, I believed that the modern game was an adaptation of this supposed ‘folk’ game and never bothered to verify this belief.
The fact that perception and belief aren’t reality is a cornerstone of Evil Rayism, but it still really spins my tiny brain when I’m kicked in the teeth by the fact.
