Martin Waldseemüller did not name the Americas after Amerigo Vespucci, but after the "friendly reception", amichevole ricezione in Vespucci’s native Italian, Vespucci reported in his journal after visiting Trinidad. Vespucci used a shorthand system that rendered the phrase as ami rice and this influenced Waldseemüller’s choice of name.
